With Mafia Wars, I always seem to do things the hard way until somebody tells me about the easy way. While trying to get to the other Zynga games which are having cross-promotions with Mafia Wars, I kept refreshing my page by traveling to different cities until I got the icon of the game I wanted to play.

I never did get the Treasure Isle Icon and thought this whole process was a bit ridiculous. Why not have all the games readily available?

New York Times says FarmVille players should try growing "actual plants"

FarmVille naysayers -- they're everywhere. They come in the form of Facebook friends who are tired of being spammed with game-related with quests on their wall, people who think games in general are a waste of time, and they also, apparently, write for The New York Times.
Over the weekend, The Gray Lady (my hometown newspaper) ran an editorial that talks about the surprise move made by Disney over the past two weeks: selling Miramax Films and buying social gaming company Playdom. It's certainly a point worth making, and the perfect way to launch into a larger article on how the movie industry is facing serious competition from all forms of media -- HBO, Showtime, Hulu, video games and, now, Facebook games. Instead, the article skips this conversation and jumps into hating on (for lack of a better term) FarmVille and social games in general.

Following are a few choice quotes from the piece:

"But what is being farmed isn't only the virtual crops. It's also the users social connections, their attention and ultimately their credit cards. The basic gaming is free, but sooner or later many players spend real cash to buy game cash. And you can't really play FarmVille without roping in your Facebook friends."

"It's a touch dismaying that social gaming is a world where players are festooned with gratuitous awards, sold trinkets for hard cash and reap rewards for dragging in their friends. It's lovely to pretend that the game reveals an inner agrarian instinct in all of us, but we would like the invite all 60-some-million FarmVille players to consider growing some actual plants."

I have to question how much time this author spent playing FarmVille or any of the other games mentioned in this piece. Case in point, this quote: "The game involves starting a farm. You get your friends to help you water and fertilize crops and harvest them, earning play money to spend on new items." You only have to play FarmVille once to know that you assist neighbors with fertilizing crops, but there is no way to harvest or water other players' crops.

Second, the article intimates that players are suckered to pulling out their credit cards to play these games. That's a serious overstatement. It's common industry knowledge that 1% to 5% of people who play freemium games on Facebook actually spend money on them. The majority of players don't spend cash, and that's why social gaming companies are standing on their heads trying to convince more people to pay.

The writer also talks about how you have to 'drag' in friends to play these games. There's an argument to be made about not spamming all of your friends with social gaming updates on Facebook, but it's pretty difficult to convince friends to play FarmVille if they don't want to. And, say you convince reluctant friends to join FarmVille, but then they stop playing -- that isn't going to help when you need them to send parts for your new garage. Some of the more devoted players have opted to create a second Facebook account just for gaming, and are making friends with new people who also play FarmVille, et al.

It's disappointing that The New York Times would run such a reactionary piece that misses the bigger point about media and technology -- it's always changing, and consumers are always looking for the next big thing.

Oh yeah, as for growing actual plants, I do that too. I have several that have lived in my apartment window for the past decade, and the hour or so a day I spend playing FarmVille hasn't interfered with that. Not yet, anyway.

Greetings! I recently sent you a screenshot showing the error that I was getting when trying to take advantage of the Vampire Wars or Farmville Promotions. As it turns out, if you have blocked either application, it will give you the error message and fail to show the application. Simply unblock the application and you are good to go.

On a side note, I have received a "Full Stamina Refill" every time that I have done the Zynga Poker and the Farmville Promotion, but the Vampire Wars Promo only gives lame amounts (81 XP) of experience each time. I'll stick with the 1st 2 and pass on Vampire Wars! I have included a screenshot of perhaps the lamest reward that Zynga has ever handed out. I will NEVER waste my time trying for the Farmville Promo again. That is a fact. - Don Becker

Central Mainframe Access # Part 2

Now we have this feature available.. Central Mainframe Access!

Yesterday, I didn't get the pop up appear.. now I have it!

I was doing a job and suddenly got the pop up of this feature telling me the secret code.. Some players have it on a fight.. Each player will have unique code, but it's not wise to spread the word about your code.. Keep it secret or you will VOID all the benefits you can get by entering it on the mainframe..

So if you have the secret code, write it down and save it somewhere.. perhaps using Notepad or just write it on a paper (I don't know if we will need the code tomorrow, so just save it).

How to enter the code?
Simple! Just go to the Homepage and you will have it on the Daily Checklist..

I enterred my code and got +3 Attack! Thanks, Team!!!

By the way, I also have this on my account for playing today..

"Now when Somebody Post Their Rewards for upgrading their Weapons Depot or Chop Shop, then we can collect from them a weapon or vehicle of our own choice. If we click on the GET YOURS button on time, all then we have to do is Refresh that page 'till we find the weapon or car we want and then click ACCEPT!"

Welcome Mafia Wars Game Designer TeeBS!!

Hey there Mafia Wars fans!

I’m a Systems Game Designer on Mafia Wars. Now what that means is that I’m the guy that is involved in making sure that all the numbers, balance and stats in the game make a great gaming experience for all types of players. It’s awesome to get feedback, both and positive and negative, from the fans of this game. It’s the passion that you show as fans which makes this game so great.

As Mafia Wars heads into its third year, there are a lot of decisions made and game structures created at the time of the game’s release that really didn’t account for Mafia Wars being played by over 20 million players per month. One of these game features that couldn’t account for the game’s rapid growth is the Top Mafia reward. Top Mafia (previous to the recent change) provided a reward if you had high-level friends in your Top Mafia in certain positions (and an additional bonus if you were in a friend’s Top Mafia). We in the design team refer to these bonuses as “passive” rewards, as once you had set up your friends, you didn’t have to do anything to maintain the bonus. Now from a game designer’s perspective, this is pretty troublesome, as we are giving away free progress (in the form of Energy discounts and rebates) for little interaction in the game. Since leveling up resulted in a full energy, health, and stamina refill, it eventually lead to some of the high-level energy players being able to level up many more times in a single session. This leveling boost was against the spirit of play we intended for Mafia Wars.

We as a game creation studio go through a tremendous amount of research and discussion about each change we make to the game, and below is a little example of that analysis. The following is a graph of typical high energy players playing in New York (the Mafia Wars city, not the real life city ), and how much all the accumulated energy rewards gains for each player per level. The left axis is the player level, and the bottom axis refers to the percentage of XP required to complete level. As you can see, the Top Mafia reward accounts for a very large percentage of passive XP each level.

Why is this situation so bad that we felt we needed to change the Top Mafia rewards? To be perfectly honest, the current passive XP reward situation put us in a big bind when it came to creating exciting rewards for the vast majority of players. Also creating a big chasm between the high energy players and the more stamina heavy fighting players. We’re not going to sugar-coat the reality of this change for the power energy players. Some of you will initially be affected negatively. We are making this change to allow us to improve the entire game to be even more awesome as a whole. What this will do is share more experience to all Mafia Wars players, allowing the community to make it an even more social experience for all involved.

In the coming weeks and months, the Mafia Wars team is rolling out an aggressive number of new features that are targeted at the “fighter”/stamina focused players. As you can see with robbing, stamina is becoming a more important stat in the game, and this will be even truer with the introduction of Fight Club (which will provide fighters with a private Marketplace), Street War and Vegas Tournament Fighting. You’ll soon see an awesome revamp for Boss Fighting. Each of these fighting-centric features takes fights to the next level, and will make you care even more about how you defend your turf against other players. Player vs. Player interaction via fights has always been one of my favorite things about Mafia Wars.

If you are a fan of current fighting, we are not changing normal city-based fighting in any fundamental way (other than the exciting addition of the Animal type), so you should feel free to continue to add Skill Points to your Attack and Defense stats. Fighting will soon allow you to win victory tokens, which will give you the chance to purchase cool new loot in the Fight Club area of the Marketplace!

Ultimately, I would like to let all our players know that we try to listen to each different opinion they have and truly have their best interests at heart. We understand that some of our decisions may adversely affect some players (and some help them too), but it is for a greater goal of making this the best game experience that our users can have.

New Top Mafia Layout

This is like a deja vous!

We have talked about this new Top Mafia here : New Top Mafia. It was using "secret" link to new Top Mafia page that has not been release yet. Now he have new layout of this feature..

First you can go to My Mafia page and choose Top Mafia button to promote your new Top Mafia..

So far I don't have any info about what is the best strategy to choose each position.. now just choose the active ones and see if you can ask help from them (including if someone bully you, etc). Don't choose based on their levels, because it can be an Energy player who can do nothing if you need their help..

Collect You Rewards

We can colelct Daily Rewards from each positions, the rewards include a consumable, a loot item, stamina refill, energy refill, or bonus experience. You can get it randomly chosen by the game.

Too bad, we can only get max staminas from this. Let's say if you only have 400 Staminas, so that's the max of Stamina bonus you can get from collecting your Rewards.. Hope this is only a glitch and we can get those 1000 Staminas!

You also will receive few experiences from interacting with your new Top Mafia.. for example if you send an email to them regarding their appearence (Missing In Action) you can get 2 XP. For sending Energy Pack you receive 3 XP, for sending a gift you earn 4 XP.

I found that the most difficult part is choosing Street Crew members.. because I don't have mafia below level 19. There 6 open slots and still can not find any.. Well, you can create 6 new Mafia Wars accounts for this but that's not allowed, right?

More info, we lose the bonuses from our previous Top Mafia positions! So every job now will cost you more energy, etc.. How dare they re-doing this game!

Anyway, have fun choosing your new Top Mafia!
