Please help Russell, a quadriplegic since '84, in the hospital for 18 months, now under Hospice care
My dear friend and former congregation member, Russell Solice, has been a quadriplegic for over 30 years now. He’s spent the last 18 months in and out of the hospital, (but mostly in) surviving infection after infection from multiple failed surgeries. When all his doctors told him recently that they had exhausted all options and had no magic bullet to offer, Russell decided to go home to spent time with his beloved family. Hospice has now been called in to help them deal with end of life issues.
Since his car accident in 1984, Russell has necessarily led a somewhat restricted life because of his physical disabilities. But did that stop him? No, Russell graduated from Louisiana Tech University with degrees in Psychology and Sociology. He worked in numerous arenas counseling others and helping others with disabilities. Does he complain? No, never, Russell is one of the most pleasant individuals you will ever meet.
As you can imagine, because of Russell’s extended hospital stay, the family is now crushed beneath a mountain of overwhelming and growing bills. These bills have cost them their home because they are so far behind in their mortgage payments.
There is no money for their youngest daughter’s college, for car repairs for their handicap van, or for the many other things that keep any family going. Since he was injured when he was 17 years old, Russell didn’t qualify for social security to receive disability payments. His wife, Dianne, works two jobs seeking to provide everything she can for their family but over the last few years, it’s getting harder and harder for this family to keep their head above water.
Russell has not lived a life without purpose. Even today, in his weakened state, he is busy on the phone encouraging other people in life-distress and praying with them. Many of those people have trials that are much less than those Russell endures daily, but he is determined that he will make a difference in someone else’s life.
He knows that God gave him that purpose. Often it is a challenge for him, but he endures. People are amazed that he would call and encourage them. But, everyday, he does just that, including the many nurses who have attended him in his past year. They all consider him a friend.
Not surprisingly, Russell has many friends locally, and around the world through the internet. As a matter of fact, anyone who meets him in person or even online, pretty quickly calls him a new friend because of his upbeat, funny personality and his positive outlook on life. He truly is one amazing guy.
Russell is so happy to finally be back home and to be able to spend this precious time with his family. He knows that God is in charge, and awaits his call to go home to be with his Lord. When that does happen, Dianne will be without a home and without the love of her life.
We could all make a difference right now by helping this family deal with what they are facing. Russell shares, “I am not afraid. I am at peace. God has a place for me in Heaven.”
Won’t you share your love and show your generosity with a donation to help this wonderful family?
God Bless you for your consideration.
Fondly,
Pastor Rick Watt,
Fredericksburg, Va.
